Through the vehicle of figural painting, Fraser’s work offers glimpses of a larger narrative – a narrative not so much incomplete as interrupted or fractured. Inspired by ambiguity, duality, discomfort and the potential for violence and desire, the artist’s practice is organized around a variety of motifs including gender, power relationships, race, eroticization and memory.
Fraser is an unreliable narrator. The work explores moments of decision or regret with poignant specificity and dubious certainty. It requires viewers to participate in the storytelling, to judge if the scene before them shows safety or danger, comfort or confrontation, protection or peril.
Fraser is a Chicago-based artist.
